Twitter Rebrands as X, Unveils New Logo

(MT Newswires) -- Twitter officially rebranded with a new logo unveiled on Monday.

The social media network's Twitter account now bears a white X on a black background logo in lieu of the blue bird logo after Twitter owner Elon Musk and Chief Executive Linda Yaccarino announced the rebranding Sunday.

Musk and Yaccarino said the move is part of Musk's plan of turning Twitter into an everything app as the company will eventually transition into payments, banking and commerce, media reports said Monday.

"And soon we shall bid adieu to the Twitter brand and, gradually, all the birds," Musk tweeted on Sunday morning. Yaccarino also tweeted on the same day that "X will be powered by AI" and "centered in audio, video, messaging, payments/banking." On Monday, Musk also posted a photo of the new logo being projected onto the company's headquarters in San Francisco.

The crowd-sourced logo, which Musk said is a "minimalist art deco," was displayed as his profile picture late Sunday with his Twitter bio changed to "X.com," which redirects to twitter.com. Media reports said the X concept was derived from Chinese app WeChat, which users can use for messaging, paying bills and hailing taxi cabs.

While the rebranding received positive reactions and feedback, some opposed the move and expressed differing opinion. A warning came from analyst Mike Proulx, a research director at the analysis firm Forrester, who said that the move was "high-risk" in relation with Twitter's financial position concerning advertisers as well as Mark Zuckerberg's Meta launching of a rival called Threads, reports said.
